The technological and institutional changes initiated in India to improve the condition of farmers include:

The land reforms initiated in the first five-year plan aimed to:

  • abolish zamindari and
  • consolidate land holdings. The consolidation of land holdings involved combining adjacent small fields into single large farms and encouraging individual land owners to do cooperative farming.

Language and popular traditions played a crucial role in making of nationalism. For example , after Russian occupation, Polish language was forced out and Russian was imposed everywhere. However, the Polish people continued to preach in Polish. The use of Polish language came to be seen as a symbol of struggle against Russian dominance. Karol Kurpinski celebrate the national struggle through his operas and music. He turned folk dances like polonaise and mazurka into nationalist symbols. Hence, traditions were also helped in making of nationalism.

A person is identified as belonging to a particular nation by his cultural traditions and the language that he speaks. The language as well as the traditional practices usually develop and get established over a long period of many hundreds of years.
They give an identity to ah individual wherever he is. For instance, a Frenchman will normally speak the French language fluently. He will also follow French traditions and customs wherever he is in the world, as he would have imbibed them in his family from his childhood days. Thus, he will be identified as a French national.

‘Dust of Snow’ is a beautiful poem written by Robert Frost. This poem conveys that even a simple moment has a large significance. The poet mentioned crow and hemlock tree in this poem. Crow signifies his depressive and sorrowful mood and hemlock tree is a poisonous tree. Both these signify that the poet was not in a good mood and so he describes the dark, depressive and bitter side of nature to present his similar mood.

The poet says that once he was in a sad, depressive mood and was sitting under a hemlock tree. A crow, sitting on the same tree, shook off the dust of snow, small particles of snow that remained on the surface after the snowfall, on the poet. This simple action changed the poet’s mood. He realised that he had just wasted a part of his day repenting and being lost in sorrow. But the change in his mood made him realise that he should utilize the rest of the day in some useful activity. His sorrow was washed away by the light shower of dust of snow. His spirit was revived and he got ready to utilize the rest of the day.

There are no batteries that actually store electrical energy; all batteries store energy in some other form. ... The space between the electrodes is filled with an electrolyte--an ionic liquid that conducts electricity. One electrode--the anode--permits electrons to flow out of it. The other--the cathode--receives them.  A battery is a device that stores chemical energy and converts it to electrical energy. The chemical reactions in a battery involve the flow of electrons from one material (electrode) to another, through an external circuit. The flow of electrons provides an electric current that can be used to do work.

Italians were scattered over several dynastic states as well as the multinational Habsburg Empire. During the middle of the 19th century, Italy was divided into seven states, of which only one state – Sardinia – Piedmont – was ruled by an Italian princely house. The north was under Austrian Habsburgs, the centre was ruled by the Pope and the southern regions were under the domination of the Bourbon kings of Spain. Even the Italian language had many
regional and local variations.

(i) Peasants, artisans, workers and businessmen enjoyed this newly found freedom. (ii) They realized that Uniform laws and standardized weights and measures and a common national currency would be more helpful in a trade as it would facilitate the movement and exchange of goods and capital from one region to another. (iii) Increase in taxes, censorship and forced conscription in French armies were seen as outweighing the advantage of administrative changes which Napoleon brought.

Gaurav Seth 5 years, 2 months ago

  • IN the areas conquered by the Napoleon, the reactions of the local populations to French rule were mixed.
  • Initially in many places such as Holland and Switzerland as well as in certain cities like Brussels, Mainz, Milan and Warsaw, the French army were welcomed.
  • But the initial enthusiasm soon turned to hostility, as it became clear that the new administrative arrangements go hand in hand with political freedom.
  • Increased taxation, censorship, forced conscription into the French armies required to conquer the rest of Europe.
