- In Russia most industry was the private property of industrialists. Workers were exploited by industrialists. Wages were very low and working conditions very poor. Working hours were long.
- In the country side peasants cultivated most of the land. But the nobility, the crown and the Orthodox Church owned large properties. In Russia peasants wanted the land of the nobles to be given to them.
- Tsarist Russia joined on the side of the Allied Power with the aim of making some military gain. Russian army lost badly in Germany and Austria between 1914 and 1916. There were 7 million causalities by 1917. Such huge defeats were humiliating and shocking for people of Russia.
- Karl Marx’s theory of scientific socialism appealed to the people. He told the people to overthrow capitalism.
- By the 1870s, socialist ideas had spread throughout Europe. Workers had formed associations to fight for better working conditions.

Santosh Yadav, the legendary mountaineer from India and Maria Sharapova, Russia’s tennis sensation trained in the U.S., are living examples of determined and consistent hard work. Both these young women started their journey to the top from humble backgrounds. Today both Santosh Yadav and Maria Sharapova enjoy the status of a celebrity. To attain this position they both had to work very hard in their life. Both of these girls were of strong and true determination. They had a clear vision of their life. They wanted to raise themselves up from the common people around them. They sacrificed the comfort and pleasure of their life to achieve their aim. They reached on top of the world. Santosh Yadav became the only women of the world to scale Mt Everest twice. Maria Sharapova got the fibre position in the world in women tennis. They proved that nothing is impossible before true determination and iron will.

Birth rate, death rate and migration are the three major components of population growth.
(i) Birth rate is the number of live births per
thousand persons in a year.Birth rate is the major component of growth because if birth rate is higher than death rate, growth rate will automatically increase.
(ii) Another major component is death rate. Death rate is the number of deaths per thousand persons in a year.These days we find that there are improved health facilities and there is awareness among people about their health maintenance. With the result, death rate has declined leading to growth rate of the population.
(iii) Migration is another component of population growth.Migration is the movement of people across regions and territories. Though internal migration does not change the population of the country but it does affect the distribution of population within the country International migration definitely changes the size of the population.
