After the state board closed doors to Class XI admissions for those CBSE students who did not take the Class X board exam, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CICSE) has followed suit. Indian School Certificate (ISC) schools across India will not admit those CBSE students who opted for the school-based assessment in Class X.

The council’s decision was a fallout of confusion among principals who were unclear on the issue when some CBSE students approached ISC schools for admission to Class XI. The CBSE board issued the same report cards to both sets of students. – those who took the board exam and those who sat for school-based assessment. The council has issued a circular to all ISC schools in India, informing them not to take CBSE students who had opted for school-based assessment.

While the state board of education is still unsure how to differentiate between both sets of studentsand is demanding that CBSE schools part with this information, the CISCE is demanding a copy of the students’ exam admit cards before accepting applications. If any CBSE student applies for admission to Class XI, they should also get a letter from their principals certifying that they took the board exam. The council was merely following the CBSE’s own circular, which made it amply clear that students who wanted to continue in a CBSE school could go in for school-based assessment, whereas those who wanted to shift to another board should take the external board exam.

Mumbai’s deputy director (school education) may well borrow the CICSE’s idea and demand copies of admit cards from CBSE students wanting to enter junior colleges. “We sent two letters to CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi asking him to direct schools to release the names of students who took their board exam. But we haven’t received a response. Now we are approaching CBSE schools and asking principals to approve the forms of only those students who have taken the board exam,” said a senior state government official.

CBSE students who did not take the board exam had made a clear choice to continue in Class XI and XII in the same school. The decisions by the CICSE and the Maharashtra board of education forces them to stick to that plan. However, sources said that there are students who want to change their minds, especially since it’s the first year of the school-based assessment system. “There are a lot of students going back and forth on their decision.

It’s the first year and there is bound to be some confusion and students and parents didn’t know how things would pan out. But CBSE schools will take all their students,” said principal Avnita Bir of RN Podar School, a CBSE school.

International board schools said their doors were open to students who had opted for school-based assessment.

  1. Dear sir/madam,
This has been very unfair with us. We the students of Cbse were told that all the boards will co-operate and will take admission by our principal. But now the Isc schools are not taking us.

  2. @chirag y d u want 2 go 2 isc? Isc syllabus sucks. CBSE is the closest we cn get 2 curriculum followd in the U.S nd othr western countries. State board and ISC go 2 hell. Even IIT-JEE nd AIEEE is favourble 2 CBSE stdnts ie CBSE pattern qs. CBSE is da future.
