It is because the when the temperature rises, the kinetic energy of the particles is high, whereas in low temperature (cold) the kinetic energy of the particles not so high. That is why the smell of hot sizzling food reaches you several metres away,but to get the smell from cold food you have to go close. As the kinetic energy increases, The particles move freely i.e. in gaseous form which mixes with air and reaches us. This process is also called diffusion
