Liquids have no definite shape but definite volume. The particles of liquid are loosely packed so they are soft. Since water has the properties of liquid, it is a liquid. Solids have definite shape and definite volume. The particles are tightly packed so they are hard. Since wood has the properties of solid, it is a solid.

Mixture is formed when two or more substances is mixed together in any proportion. The constituent particles show their properties. The constituent particles can be separated by physical methods like handpicking. Compound is formed when two or more atoms of elements are combined chemically to form a new substance in a fixed proportion. The properties of the constituent particles are different from the properties of compounds. The constituent particles cannot be separated by physical methods but can be separated by chemical methods like electrolysis.
