धनराज पिल्लै की ज़मीन से उठकर आसमान का सितारा बनने तक की यात्रा कठिनाइयों और संघर्षों से भरी थीं। धनराज पिल्लै एक साधारण परिवार के होने के कारण उनके लिए हॉकी में आना इतना आसान न था। उनके पास हॉकी खरीदने तक के पैसे नहीं थे। उन्हें हॉकी खेलने के लिए अपने मित्रों से हॉकी स्टिक उधार माँगनी पड़ती थी। लेकिन कहते हैं ना जहाँ चाह वहाँ राह धनराज पिल्लै ने हार न मानते पुरानी स्टिक से ही निष्ठा और लगन से अभ्यास करते रहे और विश्व स्तरीय खिलाड़ी बनकर दिखाया। ऑलविन एशिया कैंप में चुने जाने के बाद धनराज पिल्लै ने मुड़कर कभी पीछे नहीं देखा अर्थात् उसके बाद वे लगातार सफलता की सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ते गए।
