Well, the definition you gave is correct, but on a broader or general basis, it is intercellular (or sometimes intra) space or volume which is actually or appears to be enclosed by a group of cells (in the case of tissues like sclereids and fibres) or by any membrane within the cell (just as in the case you mentioned).
