Buffer stock is the stock of foodgrains namely wheat and rice that is procured by the government through the Food Corporation of India (FCI) from states where there is surplus production at a pre announced price.
Buffer stock is created by the goverment to solve the problem of shortahe of food during calamity and adverse weather conditions and also to distribute them to the poor people at a price that is lower than the market price.
