Let √5 be a rational number √5 =a/b Squaring both sides, √5 ka whole square =a ka square/b ka square 5=a square /b squares So, a square /5 =b square----------- eqn 1 B square = a square /5 A square is divisible by 5 So ,a is also divisible by 5 Let a =5c Put a =5c in eqn 1 5c ka whole square /5 =b square 25 c square /5=b square 5c square = b square
