The freshly prepared solution of ferrous sulphate is added to aq. Solution of a nitrate pure conc. H2SO4 is than added dropwise along the walls of the test tube . The appearance of a drak brown ring at the junction of the two layers indicate the presence of a nitrate ion. No3- + 3fe2+ + HH+ ----------- NO + 3Fe3+ + 2H2o (Fe(H20)6)2+ + Ni ------------ (fe+(H20)5No+) + H20
