Electric motor works on the principal of Fleming's left hand rule. When electricity is passed through the armature coil one side of coil forced to move in downward direction and one side is forced to move in upward direction this led to couple the couple rotates when the contract of cumulator breakers the force of inertia rotates them and they again come in contact of brushes and again couple led them to rotate. But the direction of current in arms changed.
