Photoreceptors are light sensitive cells with chemicals called pigments which react to the presence of light. They are necessary for vision in higher animals and energy production in microbes. Upon being exposed to light, light sensitive protein molecules on the cell surface get activated and send a signal to the inside of the cell, which can be used to perform various functions inside the cell.
