It can't be equated with progress because when new species is formed, it is not necessary that the old species will disappear from earth.

Evolution is the sequence of gradual changes which take place in the primitive organisms over millions of years in which new species are produced. Since the evolution is of living organism, so it also called 'organic evolution'.
