What happen when electricity is passing through the brine? Write its chemical equation for it.
when electric current passed through brine, hydrogen gas is evolved at the anode, chlorine gas is evolved at the cathode, and sodium hydroxide is formed in the electrolysing solution.
Sodium chloride + water → sodium hydroxide + chlorine + Hydrogen
2NaCl(aq) + 2H₂O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + Cl₂ (g) + H₂(g)
These three co-products are all very useful chemicals.
