Why two carbon atoms cannot be linked by more than three covalent bond?

Naveen Sharma 7 years, 2 months ago

Ans. The orbitals geometry around carbons cannot allow them to overlap in such a way to form four bonds between them.
2pa, 2py and 2pz orbitals are perpendicular to each other, this makes difficult for the orbitals two overlap with same atom.
