In a group: The acidic characters decreases on moving down a group since the tendency to gain electrons decreases. Due to the increase in atomic size the force of attraction between the nucleus and the electron to be added becomes less.
In a period: The acidic character increases across a period from left to right since the tendency to gain across a period from left to right. As the atomic size reduces the effective nuclear charge acting on the valence electrons increases across a period from left to right
