If we connect shunt to galvanometer in series it converted into ammeter, it starts working like a ammeter that is why shunt in ammeter connected in series and parallel to galvanometer.

Gravitational potential energy is negative at the surface of Earth, because work is done by the gravitational field in bringing a mass from infinity.
In other words, work has to be done on a body, if it is taken away from the gravitational field of the earth. Thus, potential energy is negative.
