Let r cos θ = –1 and r sin θ = 1
On squaring and adding, we obtain r2 (cos2 θ + sin2 θ) = 1+ 1
⇒ r2 (cos2 θ + sin2 θ) = 2
⇒ r2 = 2 [cos2 θ + sin2 θ = 1]
This is the required polar form.

Prove the following identites
sec4x - sec2x = tan4x + tan2x
SOLUTION
LHS = sec4x - sec2x
= sec2x(sec2x - 1)
= (tan2x + 1)(tan2x) (∵ sec2x - tan2x = 1)
= tan4x + tan2x
=RHS
Hence proved.
