Aram is acting as the moral center of the story. He is the person who suspects about the stealing of horse.
He also tells Mourad about the inquiry conducted by John Byro. He doesn’t create any dispute & followed the conduct of the society.
This might be the reason that he was never able to find his way with animals.

The story ‘Ranga’s Marriage’ takes us to those times when there were few people in villages in India who knew English. The village accountant was the first one who had enough courage to send his son to Bangalore to study. Those days people didn’t speak in English in the village. Nor did they bring English words while talking in Kannada. To support this, the narrator gives an instance. Rama Rao’s son bought a bundle of firewood. The woman asked for four pice, the price of firewood. The boy told her that he did not have any ‘change’. The poor woman did not understand the English word ‘change’. She went away muttering to herself.
However, English was considered to be a ‘priceless commodity’. That was why Ranga’s home coming in the village was a great event. The people wanted to have a look of the boy who had gone to Bangalore to study English. Many people believed that those who received education in English lost their caste. Ranga was still wearing the sacred thread, ‘the janewara’. He had not lost his caste and culture.
The attitude of the narrator to English is quite positive. He considers English to be ‘a priceless commodity’. But he wants to show that English doesn’t have any adverse influence on the religious and cultural practices of the people. Ranga wears the sacred thread and bends low for ‘namaskara’ to his elders.

The narrator noticed all the belongings of her mother kept inside the room in a very tasteless manner. Seeing this, she decided to leave without meeting Mrs. Dorling and forego all the belongings of her mother. She thought that having all these things will not be of any use since these cannot bring her loved ones back and bring peace to her mind. So, she left at once.

On their second day out of Cape Town, they began to encounter strong gales. For the next few weeks they blew continuously and furiously. The size of the waves was alarming. They rose up to 15 metres, as high as their main mast. The captain took certain urgent steps to protect the boat. He decided to slow down the speed of the boat. Storm jib was dropped. Heavy mooring ropes were looped across the stern. They went through their life-raft drill. Lifelines were attached. They put on oilskins and their life jackets. But all these precautions proved inadequate. The roar of high waves increased to a thunder. Then a loud explosion shook the deck.

The phenomenon of war brings lot of suffering for human beings. It brings with it death and destruction. It kills the feelings of love and sympathy. The story "The Address" is based on this theme. During the war, the narrator's mother leaves all her valuable things with an acquaintance. The mother dies and many years later the narrator returns to Mrs Dorling to take back all her belongings. But the woman shows no sympathy for her. On the contrary, she behaves in a very hard hearted manner. She doesnot allow the girl to enter the house. She turns out to be a lady bereft of all human emotions. Thus we find that war leaves the world desolate not only on the physical level but also on the emotional and spiritual level.

Mrs Dorling is an important character of Marga Minco’s short story The Address’. She is introduced to us as the mother of a fifteen-year old daughter. Like her daughter, Mrs Dorling has a ‘broad back’. When the narrator rings the bell, Mrs Dorling appears wearing the green knitted cardigan of the narrator’s mother. This shows how mercilessly she is using all ‘nice things’ of Mrs S.
Mrs Dorling lacks human qualities of head and heart. She is selfish. She is rude and ill mannered. She also lacks good sense and decency. She only knows how to exploit people and situations to her own advantage. She exploits Mrs S’s fear for war. She walks away with all her ‘nice things’ to 46, Marconi Street. She makes no effort to return them when the narrator visits her.

“We are not Afraid to Die.........” is a first person account of an adventurous ordeal that a family experiences during the voyage. There are three sections of the text. The narration of events matches the mood of the voyage. The first section describes how the voyage began with great hope and fanfare in July 1976. They were attempting to ‘duplicate the round-the-world voyage made 200 years earlier by Captain James Cook. Wavewalker had been professionally built. It was thoroughly tested in the roughest weather. They sailed down to Cape Town. The trouble started only when they left Cape Town. On January 2, the waves were gigantic. The narration of the events mirrors the hectic efforts of the captain and the crew to protect Wavewalker.
The second section : “Search for an Island” describes their struggle for survival for the last 15 hours. On January 4, they ate their first meal in almost two days. But the respite was short lived. This also captures the highly emotional response of the children. Jon declared : "We aren’t afraid of dying if we can all be together—you and Mummy, Sue and I.”
In the last section “Cheerful Landing” the narration shifts back to the relaxed style. The captain was sure to reach lle Amsterdam. Jon gave the good news. The island was in front of them. All the 28 inhabitants were there to cheer and help them ashore.

The narrator’s uncle was considered to be a crazy man. Actually, he was the natural descendant of the crazy streak in the family. He was a huge and powerful man. He had a big strong head with black hair. He was a man of furious nature. He was short tempered and of irritable nature. He would not let anybody talk before him. He would stop him shouting. “It is no harm ; pay no attention to it.”

This phrase explains the contrast between the length of human life as compared to that of the sea. Human life is very short lived, transitory and temporary as compared to the sea which is a symbol of permanence, immortality and eternity. The poet uses the phrase ‘terribly transient feet’ to highlight the temporal nature of human life. The life of a human being is nothing as compared to the life of a sea. The sea has more power as compared to the human life since it is static in nature, stable and unlikely to be affected. Its continuance depicts its immortality whereas human merely lives around sixty to seventy years. The sea is an endless entity which survives much more than human life.

The narrator of the story, the daughter of Mrs S, wants to forget the address. Actually, the narrator goes to 46, Marconi Street to meet Mrs Dorling. She goes there in search of her mother’s belongings. The narrator’s mother hands over all her articles to Mrs Dorling before leaving her town during the war. Mrs Dorling assures her that they will remain safe in her hands. There is no written agreement. The narrator is not at all convinced with this. She has no faith in Mrs Dorling.
After the war the narrator makes an effort to see Mrs Dorling. But the woman refuses to recognize her. She does not give time to her even for talking. Her uncharitable remarks “Have you come back ?” reveal so many things. Mrs Dorling doesn’t want to receive the narrator. Nor has she any intention of returning the belongings of her dead mother to her. During her second visit, the narrator can’t meet Mrs Dorling. She is not at home. Her daughter is alone in the house. The narrator sees everything there. All the silver cutlery, antique plates and big vases are there. But they are useless now. Their true owner is no more in this world. The narrator resolves never to go there again. She wants to forget the address which is of no use to her now.

The story is written in first person and is in biographical mode. It is a perception of Khushwant Singh of his grandmother through his own eyes.A very touching story that shows the special bond and connection between a boy and her granny and the changes which comes in their relationship as time passes by .
For him his grandmother was something close to idealism and despite many diffrences in their likings, he always loved and respected her by heart. Her love for him was also very deep. Not only that, the grandmother was an epitome of Love and Sacrifice which is hightled as the main theme. The whole story revolves around her. She laid her heart not only for Humans but also Animals. She was very religious. But with the elapse of time the grandmother is left alone, but she Accepts than and Never Complains. So acceptance of every situation that comes before you is another one. Thus the grandmother is also a Strong woman as she accepts whatever comes before her. After her peaceful death the spparows even mourned her death as they stopped churpping and they did not even eat the pieces of bread thrown before them. It highlights the CHANGE IN RELATIONSHIP with the passage of time, every thing in world is to be faced with courage. It is often the worst time in one's life when they realise their true potential as the grandmother became a Strong woman after the departure of author.
