Aram’s cousin Mourad was considered the natural descendant of the crazy streak in the tribe. He had a passion and craze for horses and riding. Before him was his Uncle Khosrove. He was a man of very furious temper. He could stop anybody from talking by his roaring.
Mourad seemed to have inherited the crazy streak from his Uncle Khosrove as he displayed his temperamental, hostile and obstinate attitude towards life.
In spite of the threat to the Garoghlanian tribe's reputation, Mourad stole John Byro's horse and kept it hidden for six weeks to practice his passion for riding. He could go to any extent to enjoy the things that he loved. He could handle any difficult situation with a cool and composed mind. When John Byro spotted him with the stolen horse, he tackled the situation in a composed manner and earned Mourad's admiration.

The narrator belongs to Hosahalli, a village in the erstwhile Mysore State. Hosahalli is to Mysore state what the sweet ‘Karigadabu’ is to a festive meal in South India. The village has some mango trees, creepers and a pond. The people are simple. The ‘priceless commodity’, English is not so widespread in Hosahalli. The narrator is proud of his village and speaks glowingly of it.

She hoped that the author would listen and get to know it by heart.
The grandmother would say her prayers in a singsong manner in the hope that the author would hear them and semiconsciously these will be ingrained in the author's young mind. It is easier to remember things when one memorizes them in a singsong manner and so the author says that without specifically intending to do so,he remembered the prayers.

The people of Hosahalli were curious to see Ranga. The youngman had gone to Bangalore to study English. They rushed to have a look of him. Soon they were satisfied that Ranga was the same as he had been six months ago. A woman ran her hand over his chest. She said, ‘the janewara is still there’. She declared that Ranga hadn’t lost his caste.

Yes when the people are pious and good even nature mourns their death as the narrator's grandmother who was a very pious and a good lady ,on her death even the birds who she used to feed everyday had come and gathered around her shroud covered corpse in thousands. They also did not react to the bread crumbs put to them. They sat there without any single chirup till the grandmother's corpse was taken for funeral and after that they flew away quietly. This shows that even the birds were sad and came to mourn the death of the grandmother.
