The Second World Was began in 1939 and ended in 1945. It was fought between the Aliies (Britain, Russia, France and USA) and the Axis powers (Germany, Japan and Italy).
Vietnam during the Second World War was under the French occupation. By this time, the Vietanamese had organised themselves in order to gain indepndence from the French rule. In February 1930, Ho Chi Minh brought together competing nationalist groups to establish the Vietnamese Communist (Vietnam Cong San Dang) Party, later renamed the Indo-Chinese Communist Party.
During the War in 1940s. Japan occupied Vietnam, as part of its imperial drive to control Southeast Asia. So nationalists now had to fight against the Japanese as well as the French.T he League for the Independence of Vietnam which came to be known as the Vietminh, fought the Japanese occupation and recaptured Hanoi in September 1945. This only boasted their ambition to gain freedom from French occupation as well. It was finally in 1954 that the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu.
