China and India were perhaps among the richest countries in the world up until the eighteenth century. They are also known to have dominated the Asian trade until that point. However, fifteenth century onwards, China restricted overseas contacts and retreated into isolation. China’s diminished role and the rising importance of the Americas gradually moved the focus of the world trade towards the west, making Europe its epicenter.

In French Revolution, print culture played an important role
(i) Print materials like newspapers and books popularised the ideas of the enlightenment thinkers. They gave a critical commentary on tradition, superstition and despotism in contemporary society.
They suggested that everything should be judged through application of reason and rationality. They criticised the sacred authority of church and the despotic power of the state. They questioned about the legitimacy of a social order based on tradition.
The writings of Voltaire and Rousseau were read widely. Those who read them developed an attitude of questioning, criticism and judging on the basis of rationality.
(it) Print created a new culture of dialogue and debate. All values, norms and institutions were re-evaluated and public recognised the need to question existing ideas and beliefs.
(iit) By the 1780s, there was an outpouring of literature, cartoons and caricatures which circulated everywhere and led to the growth of hostile sentiments against the monarchy. In this way, print helped people to think differently.

The functions political parties perform in a democracy are:
1) Candidates are put forward by parties to contest in elections. These candidates may be chosen by the members of the party or by the leaders of the party.
2) Parties put forward different policies and programmes and the voters choose from them.
3) Parties play an important role in making laws for a country. Laws are usually debated and passed in the legislature.
4) Parties form and run governments. They recruit leaders and train them to be ministers and run the government in the way they want it.
5) Parties that lose the election form the opposition. The opposition voices different views and criticize the failures of the government.
6) Parties shape public opinion. They have lakhs of members all over the country, and they play a great role in influencing the way people think.
7) Parties provide the common man access to government machinery and welfare schemes. It is easier for a person to meet a local party leader than a government official.

History of Nationalism in Britain:
Before the 18th century, different ethnic groups of people were there in the British Isles, such as English, Welsh, Scot and Irish. Each of these ethnic groups had its own cultural and political traditions. Nationalism in Britain was not the result of a sudden upheaval or revolution. It was due to a long drawn process.
The English nation possessed the other three nations of the islands through a steady growth in property, wealth and power. Besides this, the English language, British Flag and National Anthem were promoted as national symbols to identify the nationality of the nation.
The British Parliament became the Chief instrument to curb the power of the monarchy in 1688 through a bloodless revolution. The Act of Union (1707) between England and Scotland formed the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
