Nationalism refers to the feeling of oneness and common consciousness that emerges when people living in a common territory share the same historical, political and cultural backgrounds. People may be speaking different languages (as in case of India) but the love for their nation keeps them together.

Power sharing is desirable because of two main reasons. They are Prudential reason: It reduces any chances of conflicts between social groups. By avoiding conflicts, political stability and unity of the country can be maintained. Dictatorship of the majority community can be oppressive for the minority and can even wreck the majority community as well. Moral reason: Power sharing is the true spirit of democracy. Every section of community has the right to be consulted on how they are to be governed. Governance should be carried out keeping in mind the larger interests of each section of the community.

According to National Forest Policy (1952), the forest should be 33% of total geographical area, which is essential to maintain ecological balance. But the forest area in India is far less than desired measures. This is because of illegal deforestation and development which cannot be overlooked, such as construction of roads and building, etc. On the other hand, a large population which is dwelling at the fringe of forest depends upon the forest and its produce, resulting in the reduction of forest area.

The soil is found in layers, which are arranged during the formation of soil. These layers called horizons, the sequence of layers is the soil profile. The layers of soil can easily be observed by their color and size of particles. The main layers of the soil are topsoil, subsoil and the parent rock. Each layer has its own characteristics.
The vertical section of the soil that is exposed by a soil pit is termed as the soil profile. A soil pit is a hole that is dug from the surface of the soil to the underlying bedrock. Soil profile plays a very important role in determining the use of the soil. It helps one to differentiate the given sample of soil from other soil samples based on factors like its color, texture, structure, and thickness, as well as its chemical composition.

Methods of soil conservation:
- Contour ploughing: Ploughing along the contour lines can check the flow of water down the slopes. It is called contour ploughing. It can be practised on the hills.
- Terrace cultivation: Steps can be cut out on the slopes making terraces. It restricts soil erosion. It is practiced in western and central Himalayas.
- Strip cropping: Large fields can be divided into strips. Strips of grass are left to grow between the crops. This breaks up the force of wind. This method is called strip cropping.
- Planting of shelter belts: Planting lines of trees to create shelter also checks the soil erosion. Rows of such trees are called Shelter Belts. These shelter belts have contributed significantly to the stabilisation of sand dunes and in stabilising the desert in western India.

(ii) Evaluation in terms of availability for development.
(iii) Planning for exploitation of resources
• The first stage includes surveying, mapping and measurement of characteristics and properties of resources.
• The second stage examines resources from the points of view of technology, economy and need.
• The third stage is related to action-oriented planning which emphasises use and reuse of the sources.

About 45% of land is used as net sown area, i.e. for farming.
About 22% of the land is under forest and the rest of the land is used for various purposes like housing, recreation and industrial activities.
Increasing population and subsequent increase in demand for resources is the main reason that forested land has not increased much during this period.
