Rise of Nationalism in Europe: Before the middle of the nineteenth century, the countries in Europe were not in the form as we know them today. Different regions in Europe were ruled by various multi-national dynastic empires. These were monarchies which enjoyed absolute power over their subjects. Various technological and the ensuing social changes helped in developing the ideas of nationalism. The process of creation of nation states began in 1789; with the French Revolution. It took about hundred years for the idea to gain concrete shape which resulted in the formation of France as a democratic nation state. The trend was followed in other parts of the Europe and led to the establishment of the modern democratic systems in most parts of the world; at the beginning of 20th century.

- The growth of modern nationalism is intimately connected to the anti-colonial movement in India, just like in any other country.
- In the process of their struggle with colonialism people began discovering their unity.
- Anti-colonial movement gave a strong issue to the people with which they could identify and could come on a common platform.
- All though each class or group of people felt that they were being oppressed under colonialism, the effects of colonialism were felt differently.
- Hence, the growth of nationalism in the colonies is linked to an anti-colonial movement.

Our Constitution did not give the status of national language to any language. Hindi was identified as the official language. According to the Constitution, the use of English for official purposes was to stop in 1965. However, many non-Hindi speaking states demanded that the use of English must continue. So, the Central Government responded by agreeing to continue the use of English along with Hindi for official purposes.
All the states have their own official languages besides Hindi. After independence, the boundaries of several old states of India were changed in order to create new states. It ensured that people who spoke the same language lived in the same state. The Central Government resisted linguistic states for some time. States like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab were created on the basis of languages. When the demand for the formation of states on the basis of language was raised, some national leaders feared that it would lead to the disintegration of the country. The Central government resisted linguistic states for some time. But the experience has shown that the formation of linguistic states has actually made the country more united. It has also made the administration easier. The ‘language policy’ has strengthened the unity and integrity of India. Thus, it is justified that the creation of a linguistic state was the first and major test for democratic politics in our country.
