Dams that have been seen as temples of modern India have not produced the desired results. They are posing a situation of the grave disaster of which land degradation is a major concern.

  1. Regulating and damming of rivers with the construction of large multipurpose projects affect their natural flow causing poor sediment flow and excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the reservoir.
  2. Large reservoirs submerge large tracts of forests, flora and habitat of fauna.
  3. Soil submersion leads to its decomposition over a period of time.
  4. Reservoirs greatly influence the landscape of the river valleys, including the proportion of land to water area as well as the drainage network pattern. Changes in the landscape are also a result of changes in soils, vegetative cover and wildlife.

Sustainable development means that a development should meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs –
(i) It is felt that the economic growth and industrialization have led to reckless exploitation of natural resources. Sustainability promotes a rational use of natural resources.
(ii) Groundwater is an example of renewable resource. But if we use more than what is replenished by nature, then we would be overusing this resource.
(iii) Once the non-renewable resources would be exhausted we won’t be able to use them in future. So, using the resources judiciously will help in maintaining the sustainability of development of our ecosystem.

EXPLOITATION of consumers take place in the markets in the following ways:

  1. Underweight and under measurement: Sometimes traders indulge in unfair trade practices. They weigh less than what they should. Sometimes they do not measure correctly.
  2. High Prices: Sometimes, shopkeeper charge a higher price than the prescribed retail price.
  3. Defective goods are also sold in the market.
  4. Duplicate articles: In the name of genuine goods duplicate items sold in the market freely and frequently.
  5. Adulteration and Impurity: Edible items such as oil, Ghee, spices etc are the common item of adulteration. They cause heavy loss to the consumers. They suffer from monetary loss as well as their health damage.
  6. Lack of safety devices.
  7. False information: Sometimes false information is passed on through the media and other sources to attract consumers. Sellers also mislead consumers by giving wrong information about a product, its price, quality, reliability life-cycle, expiry date, durability, its effects etc.

The civil war in Sri Lanka was due to not giving equal rights to Sri Lankan Tamil and Indian Tamil rather than sinhalas which led to conflicts in the country and this can be only converted to peace by giving tamils there rights and looking both the communities equally..

Primitive Subsistence Intensive Subsistence
This type of farming is done on very small patches of land. The land holdings are comparatively bigger.
Primitive tools like a hoe, dow, digging sticks are used for cultivation. Modern agricultural inputs like chemical fertilizers, HYV seeds, machines are used wherever suitable
This agriculture is dependent on rainfall and the natural fertility of the soil. Means of irrigation like tube wells, canals are used. Soil fertility is also increased by the use of fertilizers.
Family members provide labour. Labourers are hired. 
Land productivity in this type of agriculture is low. Land productivity in this type of agriculture is high as it is meant for commercial purpose.

Mahatma Gandhi decided to call off the Civil Disobedience Movement because of the following reasons.

1 .The British got worried by the developments of Civil Disobedience Movement and started arrest of various top Congress leaders.

2.This led to violent clashes in many parts of the country.

3.When Abdul Ghaffar Khan was arrested from Peshawar, angry crowd demonstrated in the streets facing armoured cars and police firing many were killed.

4.The arrest of Gandhiji led to the attacks on police force, municipal buildings and law courts by industrial workers in Sholapur.

5.Colonial government got frightened and responded with the policy of brutal repression.

6.At many places, Satyagrahis were attacked, women and children were beaten and about one lakh people were arrested. It was under these circumstances, Gandhiji called off the Civil Disobedience Movement.
