The Civil Disobedience Movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930. He wanted to oppose the colonial rule by breaking laws framed by it. This movement started with the Salt Satygraha (Dandi March) organised by Mahatma Gandhi. He began walking on 12 March 1930 from his Sabarmati Ashram. He was accompanied by thousands of people on his way. He reached his destination, that is, Dandi at the sea-coast within twenty four days. He made a fistful of salt to break the salt laws. He intentionally made himself a criminal in the eyes of the law.

The cause of the ‘Silesian Weavers’ uprising was due to the cheating of the weavers by the contractors. In 1845, the weavers raised a revolt against the contractors as the contractors drastically reduced their payments.
The viewpoint of the journalist Wilhelm Wolff for this uprising was - a large crowd of weavers reached the house of the contractor and demanded higher wages. They were not treated well, so a group of the crowd entered the contractor’s house forcibly and destroyed the furniture, windowpanes and plundered it. The contractor fled with his family to a neighbouring village but did not get shelter.
After 24 hours, he returned back with army and eleven weavers were shot dead. This shows that the viewpoint of the journalist was based against the weavers and in favour of the contractor. He did not understand the misery of the weavers properly.

The main aim was to undo most of the changes that had come about in Europe during the Napoleonic wars.
The main aim of the Treaty of Vienna (1815) was to generate a long term peace plan for Europe. In order to maintain peace, the members of this meeting (France, Great Britain, Prussia, etc.) agreed upon new national boundaries and re-organized territories. Within this new boundaries, the members of this meeting wanted to ensure that no one country would have too much power or influence in Europe. By balancing out the amount of territory and political power each country had, these nations hoped that this would prevent any future conflicts in Europe.

Conservatism is a political philosophy that stressed the importance of tradition, established institutions and customs. It also laid stress on gradual development as opposed to revolutionary change. Following are some of the salient points of conservatism:
- i. Conservatives believe that traditional institutions like the church, social hierarchies, property and the family should be preserved against all forces of change.
- ii. Many conservatives even saw forces of modernism strengthening traditional institutions like monarchy.
- iii. Around 1815, the conservative regimes in Europe were largely autocratic. They did not tolerate democratic thought, political criticism or dissent. They often put restrictions on activities that questioned the legitimacy of autocracy and imposed censorship laws on newspapers, books, plays and songs that promoted ideas of liberty and freedom.
