The assertion of social diversities in a country is very normal and healthy. It can be justified by the following arguments

  1. Sometimes various disadvantaged and marginal social groups express their grievances. Then the government know about the injustice faced by these groups and can initiate some necessary steps to rectify it.
  2. Sometimes expressing various kinds of social divisions in politics can reduce the intensity of the differences. This leads to the strengthening of democracy.
  3. Sometimes marginalized people voice their demands in a peaceful and constitutional way. In this way, they seek a fair position through elections. Thus, democracy becomes the best way to fight for recognition and accommodates diversity.
  4. Castes have also a positive impact on politics. Universal Adult Franchise and the principle of one-person-one-vote brought new consciousness among people of castes that were treated as inferior and low. In this sense, caste politics has helped people from the Dalit and OBC castes to gain better access to decision-making. Several political and non-political organizations have been demanding for the end of discrimination against these castes and more dignity and opportunities for these castes in our society.

The federalism is rehearsed in India by making three subgroups:
- Linguistic States:
A lot of old states are not in the being currently and a ton of new states are being produced, the name of the zones, states, and limits have been changed and the explanation for this was individuals who talked same languages lived in a similar place and furthermore shared same societies and religions. For instance Nagaland, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand.
- Language Policy:
The second test for Indian league is the dialect approach. Our constitution did not give the status of national dialect to any one dialect. Hindi was viewed as the national dialect yet Hindi is additionally the first language of 40 for every penny Indians so there was a considerable measure of shields to secure different dialects, other than Hindi there were around 21 different dialects.
- Center-State Relations:
Reproducing the middle state is one route in which federalism has been strengthed by and by since 1990 COALITION GOVT were on the inside on the grounds that no single gathering got a reasonable greater part in the Lok Sabha, the real national gatherings needed to go into an organization together with many gatherings including a few local gatherings to shape a legislature at the Center.

Politics in Caste

The caste system in India can also become politicised in the following ways:

  • When a particular caste tries to gain prominence by adding many neighbouring castes and sub-castes which were earlier not included.
  • The caste system also becomes politicised when caste groups are required to enter into a coalition with other castes. In such a case, every caste tries to gain maximum benefits for itself.
  • Of late, many caste groups have gained entry into politics by terming themselves as ‘backward’ or ‘forward’ caste groups.

It is to be noticed that the existence of the caste system is itself not healthy for any democracy. It mostly produces negative results. In India, it has resulted in the vicious circle of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy for many castes. The caste system may also lead to caste division, caste violence and conflicts resulting in violence.

Caste in Politics

However, we also need to keep in mind that the caste system always does not play a role in shaping politics or deciding the candidates from a constituency. This is due to the following reasons:

  • Not every constituency in the country has a clear majority of one single caste. Therefore, every party is required to win the trust of the people belonging to different castes.
  • No political party wins all the votes of a particular favoured caste or community. When people say that caste is a ‘vote bank’, they simply mean that many people from that one particular caste may vote for the party.
  • Because several political parties fight elections, there may be many candidates from the same caste fighting elections against each other.
  • It has been seen that many elected MPs or MLAs may lose the elections. If candidates are elected on caste lines, then no candidate can ever lose the elections.

Nationalist movements spread when people belonging to different regions and communities began to develop a sense of collective belonging. Undoubtedly, this sense of collective belonging developed through the experience of united struggles. But many cultural processes also contributed to it. History, fiction, folklore, songs, popular prints and symbols, all played a part in the making of nationalism. It was seen in India during its freedom movement.

  • Historians have discovered several silk routes over land and by sea covering vast region of Asia and connecting Asia with Europe and North Africa. Even pottery from China, textile and spices from India and South Asia also travelled the same route.
  • Precious metals like gold and silver transported through silk route in return. The traders along with trading items carried knowledge, ideas, values, skills invention, life style, foods, habits and religious beliefs etc.
  • Buddhism emerged in India and spread through these silk routes in different directions. The silk route not only played a role in linking distant parts of the world, it also promoted pre modern trade and cultural links.

Steps that should be taken to reform the political parties in India are:

  • A law should be made to regulate the internal affairs of political parties. It should be made compulsory for political parties to maintain a register of its members, to follow its own constitution and to have an independent authority.
  • It should be made mandatory for political parties to give a minimum number of tickets, about one-third, to women candidates. Similarly, there should be a quota for women in the decision making bodies of the party.
  • There should be state funding of elections. The government should give parties money to support their election expenses.
  • A strict law should be passed by the Court prohibiting any person with criminal charges from contesting in elections.
