From the last two or three decades, we have seen that for the sake of economic growth, the health of the environment has taken a toll. As a result, there has been an impact on the environment such as decline in air quality and climate change due to greenhouse gases. All these factors led to the need for sustainable development, as if left unchecked it can cause irreversible damage to the environment.

Power sharing arrangements can also be seen in the way movements, pressure groups and political parties influence those who wield power. Choosing the various contenders for power is a choice and freedom that should be given to citizens. This results in competition among different parties in contemporary democracies. This competition helps in ensuring that power does not remain in the hands of one political party. In the long run, power gets shared between political parties representing different social groups and ideologies. When an alliance is formed among two or more parties to contest elections, the power sharing is direct. If this alliance of different political parties wins the elections, then the Government formed will be a coalition Government which will result in sharing of power among political parties. By taking part in the decision-making process and by participating in the governmental committees, the different interest groups such as those of industrial workers, farmers, industrialists, businessmen and traders will also have a share in the Governmental power.

Both the statements are true but their meanings are different. Two people may have different developmental goals but they need not always be conflicting. For example, the developmental goal of different people may differ according to their status. A girl from a rich family may want the same freedom as her brother, may want to go on foreign trips, own a costly mobile, may want to study abroad etc. But a girl from a poor family will consider going to school and enjoying with friends as her developmental goal. Here the developmental goals are not conflicting.  An example of conflicting developmental goal can be the construction of a flyover to reduce waiting period at a railway crossing. This can be a developmental goal for an office goer. But if the construction of the flyover necessitates demolition of slums, it can be contradictory for the slum dwellers. But on the other hand, 24-hour electricity supply would be a developmental goal for almost each and every person.

The growth of industrialization changed the social and political equation of Europe in many ways, like:

  1. Industrialization in its wake brought considerable change in socio-political sphere. Western and central parts of Europe witnessed rapid growth of industrialization leading to the growth of towns and cities and a strong commercial class whose existence was based on production for the market.
  2. This industrialization also resulted in the emergence of working class population and a new middle class comprising industrialists, businessmen and professionals.
  3. It was among these educated, liberal, middle classes that the ideas of national unity and abolition of aristocratic privileges gained popularity. All these changes had great impact on the society and political life of the people.

The 1848 Revolution in France, sometimes known as the February Revolution (révolution de Février), was one of a wave of revolutions in 1848 in Europe. In France the revolutionary events ended the Orleans monarchy (1830–48) and led to the creation of the French Second Republic. Following the overthrow of King Louis Philippe in February, the elected government of the Second Republic ruled France. In the months that followed, this government steered a course that became more conservative. On 23 June 1848, the people of Paris rose in insurrection, which became known as June Days Uprising - a bloody but unsuccessful rebellion by the Paris workers against a conservative turn in the Republic's course. On 2 December 1848, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was elected President of the Second Republic, largely on peasant support. Exactly four years later he suspended the elected assembly, establishing the Second French Empire, which lasted until 1870. Louis Napoléon would go on to become the last French monarch. The February revolution established the principle of the "right to work" (droit au travail), and its newly established government created "National Workshops" for the unemployed. At the same time a sort of industrial parliament was established at the Luxembourg Palace, under the presidency of Louis Blanc, with the object of preparing a scheme for the organization of labour. These tensions between liberal Orleanist and Radical Republicans and Socialists led to the June Days Uprising.
