(i) The most well known silk route connected China to Europe. West bound Chinese silk cargoes travelled on this route. Chinese pottery also travelled through this route.
(ii) Historians have identified several silk routes over land and sea knitting together vast regions of Asia, linking Asia with North Africa. These resulted in vibrant pre-modern trade. Through this route Chinese pottery, Indian textiles and spices from South East Asia travelled to Europe and North Africa.
(iii) Trade and cultural exchanges went hand in hand. Early Christian missionaries and later the Muslim preachers travelled by these routes. Buddhist missionaries went from India to China and Chinese Buddhist travellers came to India using the silk route.

This sense of collective belonging came partly through the experience of united struggles. A variety of cultural processes through which nationalism captured people’s imagination also came in handy. History and fiction, folklore and songs, popular prints and symbols, all played a part in the making of nationalism. The identity of the nation was most often symbolised in a figure or image. This helps create an image with which people can identify the nation. It was in the twentieth century, with the growth of nationalism, that the identity of India came to be visually associated with the image of Bharat Mata. The image was first created by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.

Three important reasons why the non-cooperation movement gradually slowed down in the cities are as follows:
- Whereas mill cloth was cheap due to mass production, khadi cloth was expensive. Hence, the urban poor couldn’t abstain from using mill cloth for too long.
- Alternative Indian institutions were slow to come up. As a result the non-cooperating Indians ultimately had to go back to British institutions.
- As a result, the students started attending government schools again and lawyers joined back in government courts.

Caste barriers are breaking down in India due to the following reasons :
(i) With the economic development, large scale urbanization, growth of literacy and education, occupational mobility and the weakening of the position of landlords in the villages, the old notions of caste hierarchy are breaking down.
(ii) Due to socio-economic changes, i.e., now, most of the times, in urban areas it does not matter much who is walking along next to us on street or eating at the next table in a restaurant.
(iii) The Constitution of India prohibited any caste-based discrimination and laid the foundations of policies to reserve the injustices of the caste system.
