The Ho Chi Minh trail symbolises how the Vietnamese used their limited resources to great advantage. The trail, an immense network of footpaths and roads, was used to transport men and materials from the north to the south. Most of the trail was outside Vietnam in neighbouring Laos and Cambodia with lines extending into South Vietnam. The US bombed this quite frequently, but they were rebuilt very quickly.

1. Khadi was more expensive than mill-made cloth. The poor people could not afford to buy khadi.
2. The boycott of British institutions posed a problem. For the movement to be successful, alternative Indian institutions had to be set up so that they could be used in place of the British ones. These were slow to come up. So students and teachers began trickling back to government schools and lawyers joined back work in government courts.

Before the French Revolution, the idea of revolution simply meant political change. Change of monarch, a change of policy, the fall of a minister, all these were called revolution by eighteenth-century men.
After the French Revolution people realized that ...
- states could be overthrown by mass action.
- whole new patterns of authority and society could be set up under a new order.
There had of course been mass revolutions before 1789, but they had scarcely succeeded unless they were backed by more organised forces. Most states at this time had armies of professional soldier who always triumphed at the end. The events of the French Revolution showed that this need not be so. The biggest army in Europe failed to prevent the fall of the Bastille.
