|
1 |
Definition |
An electric motor is a machine that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. |
An electric generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.` |
|
2 |
Rule |
Electric motor follows Fleming’s left-hand rule. |
Electric generator follows Fleming’s right-hand rule. |
|
3 |
Principle |
Motors works on the principle that a current carrying conductor experiences a force when placed in a magnetic field. |
Generators work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. |
|
4 |
Driving force for shaft |

Population control is the methodology or the practice used to control and maintain the type, location and number of people that inhabit the earth.
Quality and status of life have undergone a drastic change over a century. We have to thank the improvised and advanced technologies around the world for this. One of the impacts of advanced technology on the economy is reduced mortality rate and increased the birth rate. This has led to one of the most dangerous problems crippling the world today viz. population explosion.

- Acidic character
- When dissolved in water, acetic acid undergoes dissociation to form hydrogen (H+) ion. Because of the release of a proton, acetic acid has an acidic character. It turns blue litmus paper red, indicating that it is acidic in nature. However, it is a weak acid because it does not dissociate completely in aqueous solution.

- Reaction with sodium bicarbonate
- Acetic acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate to produce carbon dioxide.
On passing CO2 gas through lime water, the lime water turns milky. The milky appearance of lime water is due to the formation of solid calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

| Soaps | Detergents |
| Consist of a ‘-COONa’ group attached to a fatty acid having a long alkyl chain. | Consist of a ‘-SO3Na’ group attached to a long alkyl chain. |
| They are not effective in hard water and saline water | They do not lose their effectiveness in hard water and saline water. |
| Soaps are completely biodegradable | Detergents containing a branched hydrocarbon chain are non-biodegradable |
| They have a tendency to form sum in a hard water environment. | These compounds do not form scum. |
| They are derived from natural sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats. | Detergents are synthetic derivatives. |
| Soaps are environment-friendly products since they are biodegradable. | These compounds can form a thick foam that causes the death of aquatic life. |
| Examples of soaps: sodium palmitate and sodium stearate. | Examples of detergents: deoxycholic acid and sodium lauryl sulfate. |

Homologous Series
- A series of carbon compounds in which same functional group substitutes the hydrogen atom is called a homologous series.
- These compounds have similar chemical properties due to the addition of same kind of functional group throughout the chain.
- For example, the series of alkanes i.e. Methane, ethane, propane, butane and so on is a homologous series.

When we consume carbohydrate in a meal, it is broken down by several enzymes into glucose. After receiving glucose in the blood stream, insulin is produced to maintain the blood sugar level and absorb glucose.
Once glucose is absorbed in the cell, by the help of aerobic metabolism, mitochondria takes help of oxygen to burn down glucose into Adenosine tri phosphate (ATP) which is the main source of energy in our body.

Variations are beneficial for the survival of the species. Populations of organisms fill well-defined places, or niches, in the ecosystem, using their ability to reproduce. However, niches can change because of reasons beyond the control of the organisms and could even wipe out the entire population. However, if some variations were to be present in a few individuals in these populations, there would be some chance for them to survive.
For example - If there were a population of bacteria living in temperate waters and suppose the water temperature were to be increased by global warming. Most of these bacteria would die, but the few heat resistant variants would survive and grow further. Variation is thus useful for the survival of species over time.

The splitting up of white light into its constituent colours on passing through a refracting medium like a glass prism is called dispersion of light.
The dispersion of white light occurs because different colours of light bend through different angles with respect to the incident ray, as they pass through a prism. The red light bends the least while the violet the most as shown below.
