The electric motor is a device which converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. When a rectangular coil is placed in a magnetic field and current is passed through it, forces acts on the coil which rotates it continuously. When the coil rotates, the shaft attached to it also rotates. In this way the electrical energy supplied to the motor is converted into the mechanical energy of rotation.
The direction of magnetic forces is towards our right side and the direction of current is clockwise as we look into the diagram.
In an electric motor the role of split rings is to reverse the direction of current flowing through the motor coil after every half rotation of the coil. Due to this reversing of current, the direction of force remains unchanged on the two sides of the coil and hence the coil continues to rotate in the same direction

Proteins are made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units called amino acids, which are attached to one another in long chains. There are 20 different types of amino acids that can be combined to make a protein. The sequence of amino acids determines each protein’s unique 3-dimensional structure and its specific function.

(i)By studying their structural design - homologous or anologous .It can give evidences of common ancestor. Forelimbs of humans and wings of birds look different externally. However, their skeletal structure is similar. Thus, their origin is similar, but functions are different. While wings help a bird in flight, the forearm helps human beings in various activities. These structures are called homologous organs.
(ii)By the study of fossils.A million years later, some dinosaurs died at the same place with their bodies getting buried on top of the sedimentary rock. As a result, the mud, containing the dinosaurs, also turned into rock. Now, if that area is excavated deeper, dinosaur and invertebrate fossils can also be found.
(iii)Comparing the DNA of different organisms. All species have the same genetic code. So we can trace some evolutionary relationship among the species.

• The first step is the study of fossils through the techniques such as carbon dating or tracing down their descendants. to the earth
• As far as evolution is concerned, it can be studied by analyzing the genetic pattern of the organism’s right from the past to present.
• One can study the structural designs by classifying them into homologous and analogous.
It will help to correlate the animal and plant species.

The prevention of pregnancy in women (by preventing fertilisation) is called contraception. There are four methods of contraception:
- Barrier method: In barrier method of contraception, the physical devices such as condoms are used by males and females.
- Chemical method: In chemical methods of preventing pregnancy, the females use two types of pills – oral pills and vaginal pills.
- Intra-Uterine Contraceptive Devices – The use of intra-uterine contraceptive devices like Copper-T is very effective in preventing pregnancy. A Copper-T is placed inside the uterus by a doctor to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Ferrous sulphate crystals contain water molecules as water of crystalisation - (FeSO4. 7H2O).
On heating, ferrous sulphate crystals lose water and anhydrous ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) is formed.
Due to this, it's colour changes from light green to white.

At a light intensity of about 1/30 of full sunlight, potassium and chloride ions move into the guard cells from surrounding tissue. Water follows by osmosis and, as the internal pressure rises, the guard cells bulge apart from each other, causing the stomata to open.
This allows the gas exchange required for photosynthesis to take place.
In darkness, leaving the stomata open might risk damage to the leaf by dehydration.

Aim of the experiment:-
To prove that chlorophyll pigment in green leaves is necessary for the plants to prepare their carbohydrate (starch) food.
Requirements for the experiment:-
A well watered variegated leaf plant, beaker, water, Bunsen burner, mentholated spirit or rectified spirit or ethanol, iodine solution, a white porcelain tile.
Procedure for the experiments:-
A variegated leaf plant is taken for this particular experiment to prove the necessity of chlorophyll for photosynthesis. A variegated leaf is a leaf in which different patches of colors are present in a Croton or Coleus or Geranium plant. The place where green patches are present in the leaf, chlorophyll pigment is present while at the other color patches present in the leaf contain other pigments but not chlorophyll. Before starting the experiment to prove chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis an important step has to be carried out is known as De-starching. De-starching is a step in which the starch present in the leaves of the plant will be removed by keeping the variegated leaves plant in a dark room or closed cup-board for about 48 hours. This step is done to ensure that previously synthesized starch in the leaves get consumed up because photosynthesis doesn't occur at that time as the plant is kept in dark place.
After De-starching step the variegated leaf plant is kept in bright sunlight for about 6 hours. After this one of the variegated leaf is plucked out from the experimental plant. Then Iodine test is conducted for this experimental leaf to find out whether the leaf prepared starch through photosynthesis or not.
