Sphincter muscle is a muscle which has the capability of contracting and relaxing itself to guard specific openings which communicate different organs in the body.
For example, pyloric sphincter is the structure which is situated at the junction of the stomach entering the duodenum. This is structure made up of sphincter muscles which are always closed except during delivery of partially digested food, the chyme into the small intestine. This food can pass only in one way from the stomach to intestine. The reverse flow is prevented by the pyloric sphincter.
