A displacement reaction is the one wherein the atom or a set of atoms is displaced by another atom in a molecule. For instance, when Iron is added to a copper sulphate solution, it displaces the copper metal.

A + B-C → A-C + B

The above equation exists when A is more reactive than B.

A and B have to be either:

  • Halogens where C indicates a cation.
  • Different metals wherein C indicates an anion.

Corrosion is the process in which metals are eaten up gradually by the action of air, moisture or a chemical (such as an acid) on their surface. Rusting of iron metal is the most common form of corrosion. During the corrosion of iron, iron metal is oxidised by the oxygen of air in the presence of water (moisture) to form hydrated iron oxide called rust.

Soft iron core is used in electromagnets because they get easily magnetised/demagnetised when current is flowing or not flowing along the solenoid. Whereas, steel is a permanent magnet and does not lose it's magnetization even when the current is switched off. Hence, soft iron core is preferred over steel core.

The number of electrons of sodium atom is 11 of which 2 occupy the n=1 level, 8 occupy the n =2 level and 1 occupies the n= 3 level according to the rule that the maximum number of electrons a level can occupy is . So the quantum numbers for n = 3, l = 0, m=0, s= +/- 1/2. For example, sodium is in the third period of the table, so its principal quantum number is 3. Denote the principal quantum number as n and the second number, shape, is anywhere from 0 to n-1. So for sodium, the second quantum numbers are 0,1 and 2.

During spermatogenesis, your testicles make several million sperm per day — about 1,500 per second. By the end of a full sperm production cycle, you can regenerate up to 8 billion sperm. This may seem like overkill, but you release anywhere from 20 to 300 million sperm cells in a single milliliter of semen. Each drop of healthy ejaculate (also known as semen or “cum”) contains millions of sperm. Semen also contains fluids from the seminal vesicles and the prostate gland.

Neurons are the fundamental unit of the nervous system specialized to transmit information to different parts of the body.

A neuron varies in shape and size depending upon their function and location. All neurons have three different parts – dendrites, cell body and axon.

Parts of Neuron

Following are the different parts of a neuron:

Dendrites

These are branch-like structures that receive messages from other neurons and allow the transmission of messages to the cell body.

Cell Body

Each neuron has a cell body with a nucleus, golgi body, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and other components.

Axon

Axon is a tube-like structure that carries electrical impulse from the cell body to the axon terminals that passes the impulse to another neuron.

Synapse

It is the chemical junction between the terminal of one neuron and dendrites of another neuron.

Global warming is a gradual increase in the earth’s temperature generally due to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.
Global warming is the phenomenon of gradual increase in temperature near the Earth’s surface. This phenomenon has been observed over the past one or two centuries. This change has disturbed the climatic pattern of the earth. However, the concept of global warming is quite controversial. But, the scientists have provided relevant data in support of the fact that the temperature of the Earth is rising constantly.

The acidic behaviour of acid is due to the presence of hydrogen ions. The acids will not show its acidic behaviour in the absence of water, this is because acids do not dissociate to produce H+(aq) ions in the absence of water. The acidic behavior of an acid is due to the presence of hydrogen ions [H+ (aq) ions] which are produced only when acids are dissolved in water. In the absence of water, acids do not produce hydrogen ions and hence do not show acidic behavior. When an acid and a base are placed together, they react to neutralize the acid and base properties, producing a salt. The H(+) cation of the acid combines with the OH(-) anion of the base to form water. The compound formed by the cation of the base and the anion of the acid is called a salt.

Immunosuppression (IH-myoo-noh-suh-PREH-shun) Suppression of the body's immune system and its ability to fight infections and other diseases. Immunosuppression may be deliberately induced with drugs, as in preparation for bone marrow or other organ transplantation, to prevent rejection of the donor tissue. Immunosuppressant drugs are a class of drugs that suppress, or reduce, the strength of the body's immune system. Some of these drugs are used to make the body less likely to reject a transplanted organ, such as a liver, heart, or kidney. These drugs are called antirejection drugs. Examples of persons with weakened immune systems include those with HIV/AIDS; cancer and transplant patients who are taking certain immunosuppressive drugs; and those with inherited diseases that affect the immune system (e.g., congenital agammaglobulinemia, congenital IgA deficiency).
