| Metals | Non-metals |
| Metals are electro-positive. | Non-metals are electronegative. |
| Metals reacts with oxygen to form basic oxides. 4Na+O2→2Na2O |
Non-metals react with oxygen to form neutral or acidic oxide.
C+O2→CO2 |
| Metal oxides and hydroxides bonds have ionic bonds. | Non-metal oxides and hydroxides have covalent bonds. |
| Metals react with water to form hydroxide and hydrogen.
2Na+2H2O→2NaOH+H2 |
Non-metals do not react with water. |
| Metals react with dilute acids to form salt and H2. | Non-metals do not react with dilute acid and they can not displace hydrogen. |
| Metals react as reducing agent by donating electrons.
Na→Na++e− |
Non-metals are oxidizing agents that can gain the electrons.
Cl2+e−→Cl− |

The photoelectric effect cannot be explained by considering light as a wave. However, this phenomenon can be explained by the particle nature of light, in which light can be visualized as a stream of particles of electromagnetic energy. These ‘particles’ of light are called photons. The energy held by a photon is related to the frequency of the light via Planck’s equation:
E = h? = hc/λ
Where,
- E denotes the energy of the photon
- h is Planck’s constant
- ? denotes the frequency of the light
- c is the speed of light (in a vacuum)
- λ is the wavelength of the light

Metals low in activity series like copper are very unreactive. The oxides of these metals can be reduced to metals by heating alone. Copper is found as Cu2S in nature. It can be formed just heating it in air.
2Cu2S+3O2→ Heat 2Cu2O+SO2↑
2Cu2O+Cu2S Heat → 6Cu+SO2↑
<div>Then electrolytic refining of copper is carried out to remove the rest of the impurities present in the ore. The impure copper is made anode and strip of pure copper are made cathode. On passing the current as shown in the diagram, the pure copper from the anode dissolves into an electrolyte. An equivalent amount of copper is deposited on the cathode. Soluble impurities remain in the solution, whereas insoluble impurities settle at the bottom of the anode.</div>Posted by Taniya 5 years, 2 months ago

Postulates of Newton’s corpuscular theory:
Every source of light emits large number of tiny particles known as ‘corpuscles’ in a medium surrounding the source. These corpuscles are perfectly elastic, rigid and weightless. The corpuscles travel in a straight line with very high speeds which are different in different media. One gets a sensation of light when the corpuscles fall on the retina. Different colours of light are due to different sizes of corpuscles.

The path along which north pole moves in a magnetic field is called magnetic lines of force or magnetic field line. They show the direction and strength of magnetic field. If magnetic field lines are very close to each other in a particular region, then the strength of magnetic field in that region,is very large.

The magnetic pole is the region at each end of a magnet where the external magnetic field is the strongest. Poles of a magnet may refer to a magnetic monopole which is a hypothetical elementary particle.

In this process, the soil particles are loosened or washed away in the valleys, oceans, rivers, streams or far away lands. This has been worsening due to human activities such as agriculture and deforestation.
Soil erosion is a continuous process that occurs either slowly or at an alarming rate. It results in a continuous loss of topsoil, ecological degradation, soil collapse, etc.

Alcohols and carboxylic acids can be distinguished by litmus test and Reaction with sodium hydrogen carbonate
(i)Litmus test – Alcohol will have no effect on the litmus paper. Carboxylic acid acid will change blue litmus paper into red.
(ii)Reaction with sodium hydrogen carbonate – Alcohol has no reaction with sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) but in the case of Carboxylic acid it reacts with NaHCO3 which gives CH3COONa, CO2 and H2O. The reaction is evident as the carbon dioxide will turn the lime water milky.

It involves the formation of a new individual from a protrusion called bud. It is very common in plants, yeasts and lower-level animals such as Hydra.
In Hydra, the cells divide rapidly at a specific site and develop as an outgrowth called bud. These buds, while attached to the parent body, develop into small individuals. When this individual becomes large enough, it detaches itself from the parent body to exist as an independent individual.

Glucose is broken down into a three carbon molecule called pyruvate in the cell cytoplasm. Pyruvate is further broken down by different ways to provide energy in various organisms. Pyruvate is broken down in different ways in different organisms as shown below:
i.In yeast cells, during fermentation, pyruvate is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide in the absence of oxygen.
ii. In mitochondria, breakdown of pyruvate takes place in presence of oxygen to give rise three molecules of carbon dioxide and water.
iii. Sometimes, when there is lack of oxygen, especially during vigorous activity, in our muscles, pyruvate is converted into lactic acid. Concept insight: Students should know various types of respiration.

- Phylum Mollusca is the second largest animal phylum.
- They are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic and coelomate animal.
- Body is covered by a calcareous shell and is unsegmented with a distinct head, muscular foot and visceral hump.
- A soft and spongy layer of skin forms a mantle over the visceral hump, the space between the hump and the mantle is called the mantle cavity in which feather like gills are present.
- The anterior head region has sensory tentacles and the mouth contains a file-like rasping organ for feeding, called
- They are usually dioecious and oviparous with indirect development.
Examples- Pila (Apple snail), Pinctada (Pearl oyster).

Dynamo is an electric generator. It produces direct current by converting mechanical energy into electricl energy . It consists of a strong electromagnet between the poles of which is rotated an armature , consisting of a number of coils suitably wound. It is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction.
