"Bloody Sunday or Red Sunday is the name given to the events of Sunday, 22 January [O.S. 9 January] 1905 in St Petersburg, Russia, when unarmed demonstrators led by Father Georgy Gaponwere fired upon by soldiers of the Imperial Guard as they marched towards the Winter Palace to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Bloody Sunday caused grave consequences for the Tsarist autocracy governing Imperial Russia, showing disregard for ordinary people which undermined the state. The events in St. Petersburg provoked public outrage and a series of massive strikes that spread quickly throughout the industrial centres of the Russian Empire. The massacre on Bloody Sunday is considered to be the start of the active phase of the Revolution of 1905. In addition to beginning the 1905 Revolution, historians such as Lionel Kochan in his bookRussia in Revolution 1890-1918 view the events of Bloody Sunday to be one of the key events which led to the Russian Revolution of 1917."

The steps taken by the Bolsheviks to make Russia a socialist society were: (i) The Bolsheviks kept industries and banks nationalised. They permitted peasants to cultivate the land that had been socialised. The Bolsheviks used confiscated land to demonstrate what collective work could be. (ii)A process of centralised planning was introduced. Officials assessed how the economy could work and set targets for a five-year period. On this basis they made the Five Year Plans. The government fixed all prices to promote industrial growth during the first two `plans'-1927-1932 and 1933-1938. Centralised planning led to economic growth. Industrial production increased. New factory cities came into being. (iii)An extended schooling system was developed and arrangements were made for factory workers and peasants to enter universities. Cheap public health care was provided. Model living quarters were set up for workers.

"Impacts of Russian Revolution Communist parties were formed in many countries, like the Communist Party of Great Britain. Colonial people have been encouraged by Bolsheviks to follow their experiment of taking power. Many non-Russians from outside the USSR, participated in the Conference of the People of East and the Bolshevik-founded Comintern (an international union of pro-Bolshevik socialist parties). In USSR’s Communist University some received education of the Workers of the East. In Second World War II, the USSR had given socialism a global face and world stature."
