The National assembly held long debates about whether the rights of man should be extended to all french subjects including those in the colonies. But it did not pass any laws..fearing opposition from businessman whose income depended on the skace trade .It was finally the convention which in 1794 legislated to free all the slaves in the french overseas possessions. This however turned out to be a short term measure ten years later Napolean reintroduced slavery . Plantation owners understood their freedom as including the right to enslave African Negris in pursuit if their economic interests.Slavery finally abolished in French colonies in 1848

Declaration of Rights: The Declaration of Rights was a document that declared the rights of the people of France. The Declaration of Rights was inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment and the American Revolution. The Declaration of Rights declared that all men were born free and equal, and that they had certain inalienable rights, including the right to liberty, property, and security. The new judiciary was responsible for protecting the rights of the people and ensuring that the laws were enforced. Establishment of a New Legislature: The National Assembly also established a new legislature that was responsible for making laws. The new legislature was comprised of representatives of the people and was responsible for representing the interests of the people.
