Without political parties, electors would have to evaluate every individual candidate in every single election they are eligible to vote in. Instead, parties enable electors to make judgments about a few groups instead of a much larger number of individuals. Political parties are crucial institutions of a democracy which perform a variety of functions in the smooth working of a country. They are composed of leaders, active members, and their followers. Parties play a crucial role in putting forward their policies and programmes for the welfare of the general public.

Most small farmers borrow money for the requirement of capital. They borrow money from large farmers or traders that they supply various raw materials for cultivation of land or moneylenders within the village. These moneylenders charge a high rate of interest on the amount borrowed. On the other hand, medium and large farmers are able to manage the required capital with their own savings from farming.

Socialism in Russia: All political parties were illegal in Russia before 1914.
The Russian Socialist Democratic Labour Party was formed in 1898. It struggled to give peasants their rights over land that belonged to nobles. As land was divided among peasants periodically which makes them natural socialist and it was felt that peasants and not workers would be the main source of the revolution. But Lenin did not agree with this as he felt that peasants were not one social group. The party was divided into Bolsheviks and Mensheviks.
The 1905 Revolution : Russia was an autocracy. The Tsar was not subject to the parliament. Liberals wanted to end this state of affairs. They worked towards demanding a constitution during the Revolution of 1905.
Bloody Sunday : Prices of essential goods rose so quickly by 1904 that the real wages declined by 20%. During this time, four members of the Putilov Iron Works were dismissed. Action was called for. Over 110,000 workers in St. Petersburg went on strike demanding a reduction in working hours and increase in wages. The procession was led by Father Gapon. This procession was attacked by the police and Cossacks. Over 100 workers were killed. Strikes took place as a reaction. People demanded a constituent assembly.

a. .After the addiction of the throne by the Emperor in Germany, Weimar Republic was established in Germany which determined much of its history.
b. The Birth of Weimar Republic was marked by the establishment of a Democratic constitution and a federal structure. Deputies were elected to Parliament. However, right from its inception Weimar Republic faced problems and was made to accept harsh and humiliating treaty of Versailles imposed by the Allied powers which held Germany responsible and altered its political map and boundaries as it had to part with most of its territories.
c..The establishment of the Weimar Republic also coincided with rise of Spartacist League who led an uprising and who wanted radical changes on lines of Bolsheivik revolution in Russia.
d. Political instability- Germans were also apprehensive about Parliamentary style of functioning as the Republic faced political instability, with Weimar Republic witnessing 20 different cabinets in less than an year. Thus, people lost confidence in the democratic government as it had also failed to solve the problems of the Germans. The constitution framed by the Weimar Republic also had defects, it provided for proportional representation system and led to rise of coalition governments resulting in political instability.

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed and equality before the law. Liberalism became a distinct movement in the Age of Enlightenment, when it became popular among Western philosophers and economists. Liberal democracy emphasises the separation of powers, an independent judiciary and a system of checks and balances between branches of government. Liberal democracies are likely to emphasise the importance of the state being a Rechtsstaat, i.e. a state that follows the principle of rule of law.

(i) Liberals wanted a nation which tolerated all religions. In contrast, radicals wanted a nation in which government was based on the majority of a country's population.
(ii) Liberals did not believe in universal adult franchise. They felt men of property mainly should have the vote. But radicals opposed the privileges of great landowners and wealthy factory owners.
(iii) Liberals did not want the vote for women. On the other hand, many radicals supported women's suffragette movement.

Following factors led to French Revolution
Despotic rule of Louis XVI: He became the ruler of France in 1774. He had drained the financial resources of France in wars. For the cost of his regular extravagant expenses, he increased taxes which were paid by the third estate.
Division of French society: The French society was divided into three estates; first, second and third estates, respectively. Among them, First and Second Estates had 10 per cent of the total population and were the clergy and nobles. They enjoyed all privileges. Rest of the 90 per cent was of the third estate, which paid all kinds of direct or indirect taxes. This kind of discrimination led to the revolution by the third estate.
Rising prices: The population of France had increased. This resulted into more demand of food grains. So the price of bread rose rapidly, which the poor could not afford to buy. So the gap between the rich and poor widened.
Inspiration of the philosophers: Philosophers like John Locke, Jean Jacques Rousseau and Montesquieu propagated the ideas of having a society where people would enjoy freedom, equal laws and equal opportunities. Their ideas inspired the people of France to realise their dreams.
Role of middle class: The 18th century witnessed the emergence of social groups termed as middle class, who earned their wealth through an expanding trade of the manufactured goods, being exported. There were other professionals also like lawyers, administrative officials who were all educated. They believed that no group in society should be privileged by birth.

The introduction of High Yielding Varieties (HYV) of seeds and the increased use of chemical fertilisers and irrigation are known collectively as Green Revolution. It provided the increase in production needed to make India self-sufficient in foodgrains, thus improved the agricultural sector in India. High yielding wheat was first introduced to India in 1968 by American agronomist Norman Borlaug. Borlaug has been hailed as father of Green Revolution, but MS Swaminathan is known as 'Father of Green Revolution in India'.. Thus, Green Revolution is the term used to describe a new strategy of agricultural development introduced in the late 1960s, in India. It brought about significant increase in food production in India.
The main features of Green Revolution in India were as follows
(i) High Yielding Varieties seeds promised to produce much greater amounts of grain on a single plant.
(ii) Use of advanced technology, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and well-developed system of irrigation.
(iii) These steps solved food crisis in India and made India self-sufficient in foodgrains.
(iv) This led to higher income growth and reduced poverty.
(v) This led to commercialisation of agriculture. In many areas, Green Revolution is associated with loss of soil fertility due to increased use of chemical fertilisers. Also, continuous use of groundwater for tubewell irrigation has reduced the water level below the ground.

An election is a formal group decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual or multiple individuals to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century.
In China, elections are regularly held after every five years. Before contesting elections, a candidate needs the approval of the Chinese Communist Party. Only those who are members of the Chinese Communist Party or eight smaller parties allied to it were allowed to contest elections held in 2002-03. The government is always formed by the Communist Party. This it the reason that China is not democratic, because in a democracy there exist free and fair elections where those currently in power have a fair chance of losing.
