Turmeric is a good indicator of acids and bases. It turns red in bases whereas it is yellow in both acids and neutral solutions. When we mix turmeric to the three liquids, sodium hydroxide turns it into red so we conclude that it is a base. Hydrochloric acid and sugar solution keep turmeric in yellow colour. Hydrochloric acid is an acid as already mentioned and sugar solution is neutral.

The centre of the earth lying about 6000 km from the ocean floor is characterised by extremely high temperature and pressure. There is only molten magma at the earth’s centre. Oxygen is absent. Such conditions do not permit the survival of any living organism. Thus, we cannot go to the centre of the earth. (

Women are considered inferior to men. There is a belief that women do not have technical mind and therefore they cannot be scientists. It is thought that women are good at only certain jobs such as teaching and nursing. These stereotypes about women’s capability or incapability of doing certain jobs badly affect women’s right to equality. It is due to this reason that women are not paid less wages than their male-counterparts.

It is a process in which the top fertile layer of soil is lost. Due to soil erosion, the soil becomes less fertile. The top layer of soil is very light which is easily carried away by wind and water. The removal of topsoil by the natural forces is known as soil erosion 1. Afforestation Planting new trees and plants is afforestation. We live because plants live. If the plants die, all living things will also die. Thus, whenever trees are cut down new trees should be planted. Planting trees in hilly areas are most effective for conservation. 2. Crop Rotation Between harvesting one crop and planting the next crop, the fields lie bare; there is a time period when the farmland does not have any crops. During this period, the farmer either grows grass or grows other crops to prevent soil from erosion. This helps the soil to regain the lost minerals. 3. Terrace Farming In hilly areas, farming is done by cutting steps on the slopes of the hills. This slows down the flow of water and soil removed from one step is deposited on the next step. Thus, the soil is never completely lost. This is terrace farming. 4. Building Dam Dams are built to prevent floods, which not only damage the crops but also wash away the topsoil. 5. Shelerbelts The cover of plants and trees around the field also breaks the speed of strong winds and protects the soil from being blown away. 6. Embankments Bib strong structure called embankments along the banks of the river can protect fields from the floods. These embankments prevent the fast overflowing rivers and rainwater from washing away a huge amount of rich fertile soil. 7. Van Mahotsav It is an annual tree planting festival started by the Government of India. The aim of this programme is to create awareness about the need for conservation of forest and soil

Photosynthesis

Pragya Gupta 6 years, 3 months ago

Photosynthesis , green plants make their food with the help of water , carbon dioxide but in presence of chlorophyll and sunlight and giving out oxygen , sugar in the form of starch.

Yogita Ingle 6 years, 3 months ago

The process of synthesis of food in green plants is called photosynthesis. This process takes place in the cells containing the green pigment chlorophyll. The raw materials for this process are water, carbon dioxide and sunlight. Water and minerals present in the soil are absorbed by the roots and transported to the leaves. Carbon dioxide from air is taken in through the stomata present on the leaf surface. During photosynthesis, chlorophyll containing cells of leaves, in the presence of sunlight, use carbon dioxide and water to synthesise carbohydrates. The process can be represented as an equation:
Carbondioxide + water  = Carbohydrate + oxygen

Yogita Ingle 6 years, 3 months ago

Photosynthesis is defined as the process in which the chlorophyll-containing plant cells synthesize food in the form of carbohydrates, using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of solar energy.

Sources of raw materials required for photosynthesis:

(a)  Water is taken in, from the roots of the plant and is transported to the leaves.

(b)  Carbon dioxide from the air enters the leaves through the pores called stomata and diffuses to the cells containing chlorophyll.

(c)  Solar energy is used to break water into hydrogen and oxygen. This hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide to form food for the plants, which is ultimately used by the animals as well.

The degree Celsius (symbol: °C) can refer to a specific temperature on the Celsius scale or a unit to indicate a difference between two temperatures or an uncertainty. It is named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius (1701–1744), who developed a similar temperature scale. The basic unit of temperature in the International System of Units (SI) is the Kelvin. It has the symbol K. For everyday applications, it is often convenient to use the Celsius scale, in which 0 °C corresponds very closely to the freezing point of water and 100 °C is its boiling point at sea level.
