The transformation of one type of rock into another, under certain conditions and in a cyclical manner is referred to as the rock cycle. For example, igneous rocks, formed as a result of the solidification of molten magma, may break down into small particles, which may then be transported and deposited to form sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary and igneous rocks transform into metamorphic rocks when subjected to heat and pressure. These metamorphic rocks may themselves get broken down to form sedimentary rocks, or they may melt under great heat and pressure to form molten magma, which would then once again solidify to form igneous rocks.

The Greek word ‘metamorphose’ which means change of form, is the root of the word metamorphic. In other words, these are the rocks that are formed when the igneous and sedimentary rocks change their form under the following two circumstances:
- Great heat and
- Great pressure
The following are the examples of metamorphic rocks:
- Slate: Clay becomes slate after metamorphosis.
- Marble: Limestone becomes marble after metamorphosis.

Magma originates in the lower part of the Earth's crust and in the upper portion of the mantle. Most of the mantle and crust are solid, so the presence of magma is crucial to understanding the geology and morphology of the mantle.

Shearing
The hair of sheep along with a thin layer of skin (called fleece) are removed from the body of sheep. The process of removing hair (or cutting off hair) from the body of a sheep in the form of fleece is called shearing. The hair of sheep are cut off by using a cutting machine.
Shearing does not hurt the sheep because the uppermost layer of the skin of sheep is “dead. The shearing (cutting the hair) of sheep is done in the hot weather of summer so that sheep may survive without their protective coat of hair. The hair of sheep grow again before the onset of winter and protect them in cold weather. The fleece (or hair) of sheep provide woollen fibres. Woollen fibres are then processed to obtain woollen yarn.
