We know that the number written as sum of the place-values of its digits is called the expanded form of a number.
|
Standard Form |
Expanded Form |
|
|
20,37,81,405 |
= |
20,00,00,000 + 0 + 30,00,000 + 7,00,000 + 80,000 + 1,000 + 400 + 0 + 5 |
In expanded form of a number, the number is shown according to the place values of its digits.
In 2385, the place values of the digits are given below:

Hence, 2385 = 2000 + 300 + 80 + 5
Thus, 2000 + 300 + 80 + 5 is the expanded form of 2385.

1) The animals (such as cow) which eat grass have a special stomach to digest the tough cellulose carbohydrate present in grass.
2) The stomach of a cow is large and consists of four compartments (or four chambers). The first compartment of a cow’s stomach is the biggest and it is called rumen.
3) When cow eats grass as food while grazing, it does net chew it completely (because it has no time for it). The cow swallows the grass quickly with little chewing and stores it in the rumen (which is the first compartment of stomach).
4)The rumen contains cellulose digesting bacteria. The bacteria present in the rumen of a cow start to digest cellulose carbohydrate present in grass food. Thus, the grass is partially digested in the rumen. The partially digested food (or partially digested grass) in the rumen of a cow is called cud.
After some time, when the cow is resting, the cud from rumen is brought back to the mouth of cow in small amounts at a time. The cow now chews the cud thoroughly. This is why many times we see a cow (or buffalo) moving its jaws from side to side and chewing continuously even when it is not eating grass.
The process by which the cud (partially digested food) is brought back from the stomach to the mouth of the animal and chewed again is called rumination (or chewing the cud). All the animals which chew the cud are called ruminants.
When the cud is thoroughly chewed in the mouth of the cow, it is swallowed again. But this chewed cud does not go back to rumen. The thoroughly chewed cud now goes into the other compartments of the cow’s stomach and then into the small intestine for complete digestion and absorption.
The animals called ruminants can survive on grass as food because they have certain bacteria in the rumen part of their stomach which can digest the cellulose carbohydrate present in grass (and other plant leaves).
The cellulose digesting bacteria are not present in the body of human beings due to which human beings cannot digest cellulose carbohydrate present in plant foods.
We (human beings) cannot survive by eating only grass (or raw leafy vegetables) because these foods contain mainly cellulose carbohydrate and our body does not have bacteria which can digest cellulose carbohydrate.

Grass eating animals are known as ruminants. Animals like cows, goats and buffaloes eat grass. These animals swallow grass quickly and store in a sac-like structure called the rumen. Rumen forms the first stomach and is four-chambered. Here, food is partially digested and is called the cud. Plants contain cellulose in large quantities. Cellulose is a complex structure which is broken down into simpler particles in the rumen. The process where cud returns to the mouth in small lumps for ruminants to chew is called rumination.
Rumination is aided by bacteria present in the rumen which breaks down cellulose in plants. The digested food is then passed to the reticulum. Some animals including humans cannot digest cellulose for its complex structure.

• Absorption is taking simple molecules, which were produced as a result of digestion into the body (blood stream/lymph) from the intestinal cavity. Assimilation is making new compounds from the absorbed molecules, which are necessary for normal cell functioning or to produce energy.
• Absorption is mainly taking place at the small intestine. Assimilation is taking place in the liver or any other cell.
• In absorption, nutrients are added to the blood stream or lymph, but in assimilation, nutrients are taken out from the blood stream/ lymph.
Gaurav Seth 5 years, 1 month ago
Both absorption and assimilation are steps of heterotrophic nutrition. The key difference between absorption and assimilation is that absorption is the process of taking digested simple molecules into bloodstream/lymph via the intestinal villi and microvilli while assimilation is the process of synthesizing new compounds from the absorbed molecules. Furthermore, absorption takes place via active and passive transport and occurs mainly in the small intestine. On the other hand, assimilation mainly takes place in the liver. Moreover, it helps cell growth and development as well as new cell production. This is the summary of the difference between absorption and assimilation.

Difference: Though amoeba and humans share the same mode of nutrition, both process the nutrients and convert them into energy in different ways. Humans have a complex digestive system, while amoeba engulfs its food and brings it deep within the cell. Here, the food particles merge with lysosomes, which consequently dissolve the food particles.

Nutrition in complex animals involves following steps:
- Ingestion
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Assimilation
- Egestion
Ingestion: The intake of food is called ingestion. Method of ingestion, i.e. taking of food, varies from one animal to another.
Digestion: The process of breaking down of complex component of food into simpler substances is called digestion. The process of digestion is different in human, grass eating animals, amoeba, etc.
Absorption: The process of passing of digested food into blood vessels in the intestine is called the absorption.

Assimilation: The conversion of absorbed food in complex substances such as proteins and vitamins required by body is called assimilation. In other words, assimilation is the conversion of absorbed food (nutrients) into living tissues. Through the process of assimilation our cells are supplied with oxygen and nutrients.
Egestion: Removal of waste materials from the body is called egestion. The faecal matter is removed through the **** from time-to-time. Since the waste of food left after digestion is also called faeces, hence the process of egestion is also known as defecation.

When a termination resistor is connected to the circulator, it will become an isolator. Generally, since there is an expression of making the circulator function as an isolator, sometimes the isolator and circulator can create confusion.

Chlorophyll is a green pigment that gives most plants their colour. The reasons that it is green iis because it absorbs other colors of light such as red and blue, so in a way the green light is reflected out since the pigment does not absorb it. Algae have large amount of chlorophyll content in them which makes them look green. They grow well in summer as they require lot of sunlight to perform photosynthesis.

Food vacuoles
Food vacuoles of amoeba are fluid filled membrane bound structures present inside the cytoplasm of the cell. Amoeba grabs the food particle by the help of pseudopodia and takes it inside the food vacuole. The fluid inside vacuole contains several enzymes that digest the food and digested parts are absorbed into the cytoplasm. Undigested waste parts are thrown out of the cell.

autotrophs
Plants are the only organisms that can prepare food for themselves by using water, carbon dioxide and minerals. The raw materials are present in their surroundings. The nutrients enable living organisms to build their bodies, to grow, to repair damaged parts of their bodies and provide the energy to carry out life processes. Nutrition is the mode of taking food by an organism and its utilisation by the body. The mode of nutrition in which organisms make food themselves from simple substances is called autotrophic (auto = self; trophos = nourishment) nutrition. Therefore, plants are called autotrophs.

pseudopodia
Amoeba envelops its food through the process of endocytosis or phagocytosis, where pseudopodia is created by flexibility of the plasma membrane. The pseudopodia is the temporary arm-like projection in amoeba that helps collect the nutrition, alter its size and shape and acts as an organ of locomotion.
