Ocean currents influence the temperature of the region they travel through. Warm currents increase the temperature of the coasts along which they move. Sea breezes that blow over warm currents get warmed in turn and absorb moisture. Then they carry the warmth and moisture to neighboring coastal areas. For example, the North Atlantic Drift, carrying warm equatorial waters northwards, increases temperatures along the coast of north-western Europe and helps to keep ports along these coasts open (i.e., not frozen) throughout the year. On the other hand, winds that blow over cold currents become cold and dry. Along the western coasts of most land masses, these dry, cold winds have led to the development of deserts like the Atacama (South America) and the Namib (Africa) deserts.

The trees may be conifers or hardwoods. The distribution of these forests ranges through boreal, middle, and tropical latitudes. The northern coniferous forests and the equatorial rain forests are the most extensive evergreen forests.
Evergreen forests are found on the eastern and western slopes of the Western Ghats in states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. They are also found in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya, West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The tropical evergreen forests are usually found in areas receiving more than 200 cm of rainfall and having a temperature of 15-30 degrees Celsius. They occupy about 7% of the earth’s surface. They are found mostly near the equator. These forests are dense and multi-layered. They harbour many types of plants and animals. The trees are evergreen as there is no period of drought. They are mostly tall and hardwood.

Coniferous forest, vegetation composed primarily of cone-bearing needle-leaved or scale-leaved evergreen trees, found in areas that have long winters and moderate to high annual precipitation. The northern Eurasian coniferous forest is called the taiga, or the boreal forest. Both terms are used to describe the entire circumpolar coniferous forest with its many lakes, bogs, and rivers. Coniferous forests also cover mountains in many parts of the world. Pines, spruces, firs, and larches are the dominant trees in coniferous forests. They are similar in shape and height and often form a nearly uniform stand with a layer of low shrubs or herbs beneath. Mosses, liverworts, and lichens cover the forest floor.
