In 1665, Robert Hooke had discovered "cells" for the first time. In 1839, Purkinge had coined the term "protoplasm". In 1674, In pond water, Leewenhoek had observed the free living cells for the first time. In 1831, Robert Brown had observed the nucleus in a cell. In 1838 and 1839, Schleiden and Schwann had provided the cell theory which stated: • All organisms are composed of cells • Cell is the basic unit of life.
