Silica (SiO2 ) is added in the reverberatory furnace during the extraction of Cu to remove impurities of iron oxide (FeO) present in the ore. Silica here acts as a flux and reacts with iron oxide gangue to remove it as slag, iron silicate.
FeO + SiO2 --------> FeSiO3
