If there are 17 teams in a knockout tournament, we can first check if 17 is an even or odd number. Since 17 is an odd number, one team will get a bye in the first round. This means that this team will automatically advance to the next round without having to play a match. The remaining 16 teams will play in the first round, and the number of matches in the first round will be half the number of teams, which is 16/2 = 8. Therefore, in the first round of a knockout tournament with 17 teams, there will be 8 matches played and one team will get a bye. This means that there will be a total of 16 teams (17 - 1 = 16) playing in the first round.
