Carbon has 4 valence electron in it outermost shell to obtain noble gas configration it has to loss or gain 4 electron but it is not possible to hold 4 electron and loose 4 electron as it require lot of energy . So to obtain noble gas configration it form covalent bond and can neither form ....

Due to unstability of neutron and size of carbon is very small it cannot gain 4e and become c4+ while require lot of energy to donate 4e- and become c4-
