Bank keep only small proportion of their deposits as cash with themselves. For example - Banks in India hold about 15% of their deposits as cash to pay the depositors when they demand. Bank uses 85% of their deposits to give loan to the customer. Bank charges a higher interest rate of loan than they offer to the deposit. The difference between what is charged from the borrower and what is given to the depositors is the main source of income for banks.
