It is Cr2+ (I AM SORRY, THE FIRST ANSWER I GAVE WAS WRONG.) When Cr 2+ gets oxidised, it becomes Cr 3+ which has a relatively more stable electronic configuration in complexes (3d3 ~ t2g3). So, it undergoes easy oxidation. So it can easily give away electrons and thus, is a strong reducing agent.
