The following points state how the Civil Disobedience Movement came into force in various parts of the country:

  1. Gandhiji’s ‘Salt March’ marked the beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement all over India. Thousands of people in different parts of the country broke the salt law by manufacturing salt and giving demonstrations in front of government salt factories.
  2. With the spread of the movement, the foreign cloth was boycotted and liquor shops were picketed. Peasants refused to pay revenue and Chaukidari taxes. Village officials resigned from their posts. Forest people violated forest law. They went into Reserved forests to collect wood and graze cattle.
  3. In the countryside, rich peasant communities like the Patidars of Gujarat, and Jats of Uttar Pradesh were active in the movement.
  4. The poorer peasantry, often led by the socialist and the communist, joined a variety of radical movements for the remission of their unpaid rent to the landlords.
  5. Merchants and industrialists supported the movement by giving financial assistance and refused to buy and sell imported goods. Industrialists led by Purshottamdas Thakurdas and GD Birla supported the Civil Disobedience Movement.
  6. The industrial working classes in the Nagpur region participated in the boycott programmes and there were strikes by railway workers and dockworkers in 1930 and 1932 respectively. Thousands of workers in Chotanagpur tin mines also supported the movement by joining protest rallies and boycott campaigns.
  7.  A large number of women from all over India participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement.
