In the poem we came to know that Walt whitman believes that many years ago human and animals which have same character that they are self satisfied and doesn't need any kind of happiness from external source but soon with the passage of time human lost its true nature but animals are succeeded and preserving their one.

no the poet did not believe that the animal and humans are essentially similar. he believed that humans were once as innocent and self satisfied as animals but with the passage of time. they lost their natural values which animals managed to preserve theirs.
